A Christmas celebration will take place at the impoverished Blackmon Road community from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will be held at A Place for Hope community center at the corner of Blackmon Road and Archer Drive.

Activities will include a visit from Santa and an appearance by disc jockey Nate Quick of WPEG Power 98 FM. Organizers also will distribute gifts to residents from an angel tree that was set up at Tega Cay City Hall.

Refreshments will be provided.

For information, call A Place for Hope founder Donna McLaughlin at 628-0803.

For decades, Blackmon Road has been a magnet for York County's poor. Many residents live in substandard housing with no indoor plumbing or electricity.

A number of individuals, churches and agencies over the years have tried to help the neighborhood, organizing cleanups and winter goods collections and distributing meals.

The community is located off of S.C. 72, just outside Rock Hill city limits.
