An Angel Tree in Tega Cay will provide Christmas gifts for residents of the impoverished Blackmon Road area near Rock Hill. The tree will be set up today in Tega Cay City Hall, 7000 Tega Cay Drive. Gift donations should be brought in by Dec. 17. For more information, contact one of the following people: Donna McLaughlin at 628-0803 or donna@aplaceforhope.net, Sally Pritchard at 547-6866 or cypresssally@aol.com, Jane Myers at 802-3882 or mjmyers@comporium.net. For decades, Blackmon Road has been a magnet for York County's poor. Many residents are squatters who live in substandard housing with no indoor plumbing or electricity. A number of individuals, churches and agencies over the years have tried to help the community, organizing cleanups and goods collections and distributing meals. A new community center called "A Place for Hope" recently opened in the neighborhood, located off of S.C. 72 just outside Rock Hill city limits. The volunteer-run center at 1020 Archer Drive offers a variety of services including tutoring and assistance in filling out employment and government assistance forms.
