A Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey and ham, will be served in the Blackmon Road community at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Westminster Presbyterian Church is organizing the event, with the help of Higher Heights Full Gospel Ministry and "A Place for Hope" community center, located in the Blackmon Road neighborhood. Organizers say the celebration is open to anyone in need of a hot meal. Volunteers will distribute clothing and other items. All those interested in participating are welcome, said organizer Scott Reister of Westminster Presby-terian. About 400 hot meals will be served in front of the community center located on Archer Drive, off S.C. 72 just outside Rock Hill city limits. Organizers are collecting donations of the following items: bottled water, nonperishable foods, toiletries and personal hygiene products, educational items such as books or toys, kerosene and kerosene heaters, new underwear and socks, baby products such as diapers or wipes, and construction supplies. Donations can be dropped off between 6 and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300India Hook Road. For decades, Blackmon Road has been a magnet for York County's poor. Many residents are squatters who live in substandard housing with no indoor plumbing or electricity. A number of individuals, churches and agencies over the years have tried to help the neighborhood, organizing cleanups and winter goods collections and distributing meals.
